Frequently Asked Questions

What should I pack?

Please see the JHPW Packing List.

Do I need my own camera?

You do not need to have your own camera. We bring a number of different cameras and tripods for students to use, including several digital SLRs, 35 mm film cameras, medium and large format cameras, Holga cameras and more!

How much spending money should I bring?

You should expect to spend $150-300 on food and souvenirs.

Is there any funding for the workshop?

Students in the College of Creative Arts can apply for a Student Travel/Development Grant and a GPS Scholarship. Students are also eligible to receive financial aid over the summer if they are enrolled in at least 6 credits. http://www.finaid.wvu.edu/

Do I have to be a WVU student to enroll in the workshop?

No. In fact, you do not have to be a student at all. The course is offered through the Office of Academic Innovation at WVU, which enables anyone to register for the course and receive college credit. All participants are required to pay the cost of tuition and the additional workshop fee.

Do I need experience in photography to enroll in the workshop?

Not at all. In fact, many of our students are completely new to photography. We start with basic camera control instruction and move quickly from there. We have two full-time instructors and spend a lot of time in the field practicing our skills. The learning curve is tremendous for students of all levels!
